SANDBAGS.

THE SCHEME IN AUCKLAND. . The matter of sandbags for the soldiers at the front was again discussed by the New Plymouth Patriotic. Committee on Tuesday night, and it was decided to appeal for s| ag bags ami sugar bags, winch may bo left, with the Westport Coal Company. Mr. D. J. Hughes stated that his wife had recently received a letter bearing on. the matter from Major Liisk, chairman <» the Sandbag Committee of tho I armers' Onion (Auckland). In this Major Lusk said tho committee had so far purchased nothing, every item—material, accommodation, labour, etc.—being freely and voluntarily given. They got into communication with farmers, storekeepers and the sugar factory to supply bags, sacks or material suitable for making bags, and they were being well supplied. At rooms in the city there were, dozens of patriotic men and women sorting the hags, cutting to size, sewing up, tying up strings and dispatching thousands of suitable bags. So far there had been no thought of buying maternal for bags to be made up. There were throughout tho Dominion many hundreds of thou-, sands of bags practically wasted, an dm many cases allowed ,to rot, which with a little alteration and mending could be made into the most suitable article for tho defence or shelter of onr brave meai in the firing line. Where it .was necessary to cut down to the best and. uniform: size, any hag, sack, or suitably strong, material could bo utilised. > With refer-■ ence to basic slag bags, Major Lusk said.) that after being supplied with a string; fixed near the month for tying up, these were kept by themselves and received by tho Defence Department without anyi alteration. Whore alteration or re-l sewing was required the ordinary'sugar bag or similar material was about the; best and easiest to work—two sugar : bags had to bo used to make one Kind-, ba", but the were using all sorts. Major ; Lusk added ho would be pleased to, supply pattern bags or give any further information he coaid.
