THE WAR FUND.

AVEEKLY COLLECTION SCHEME. SCHEME TO BE DRAAVN UP. Tho interesting suggestion made by tho Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) that tho war fund should bo increased by weekly contributions of some small sum by everyone who can give is now being put into a workable scheme. The Now Plymouth Patriotic Committee has taken the matter up and will issue booklets to each contributor showing the amount and date- of each payment made to Die collector (Mr. AV. J. Chaney). A statement that these booklets are' now being prepared was made by Mr. Hal. Goodacre at tho meeting of the Patriotic Committee on Tuesday night. Mr. Burgess: This is the matter of which I spoke at tho farewell bo recruits a short time ago. I don’t like this carnival business. (Hear, hear.) A straight-out gift is much better. Continuing, the Mayor said there were . many people who could not afford to give, say, 10s a month, but would be perfectly willing to give 6J or Is a 1 week. It would take a good deal of hard work to get the proposal work- . ing, aud when he mentioned Dio matter it was not with the idea that ho should organise it. . Mr. D. J. Hughes said he agreed with Mr. Burgess that carnivals had a demoralising effect in some ways, but ■ considered they were tho only way to touch a certain dans who seldom gave otherwise. Mr. Burgess said that was not the point. There was room for the present scheme in addition to the carnival Mr. AV, 0. AVeston saw no reason why tho books should not be put into ' every business place in town. Mr. Burgess said iho idea was to get at those people who say they can- ' not afford to give. There were hundreds of people, young men and others, who would never miss Is a week. With £IOO a week there would be £SOOO a year, and to achieve this New Plymouth should have no difficulty in providing 2000 contributors at Is- a week. A committee—Messrs. C. E. Burgess#. J. Paton. E. Griffiths, C. E. Bellringer, AV. J. Chaney, and Hal. Goodacre—was appointed to bring the booklet out and devise means for furthering the Echeme. Air. Goodacre was appointed convener.
