PERSONAL.

Mrs. Dowling received a cable this morning saying that her son, Sergeant R. E. C. Dowling, had arrived at Birmingham Hospital. _ A Sydney cable says that Private B. Y. Wright, who has died from wounds, was employed in the Sydney Morning Herald office. His parents are resident at Invercargill. ■ The Professorial Board of Victoria College has nominated Athol Hudson, sergeant t.i E Company, Eighth Reinforcements,'son of the late Dr. Hudson, of Nelson, as Rhodes Scholar for 1916. '

Among the Inglewood enlistments appear the names of H. J. M. Thornton, solicitor; H. A. Stratford, headmaster of the Inglewood School; and R. 0Branch, borough foreman and Taranaki County ex-efigineer.

Dr. Mary Dowling, who headed the list for the Dominion in the final medical examination, has been awarded the New Zealand Travelling Medical Scholarship. This entitles the holder to free tuition for one year in England or the European Continent, together with £l5O a year expenses, ■ Dr. Dowling is the first woman in New Zealand to receive this honour.

Mr. A. L. Hempton, manager of the Bank of New’ Zealand at* Whangaret, who has he’bn transferred, was entertained at a representative gathering of citizens and farmers on Wednesday last. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Jack, who occupied the chair, expressed the regret felt at Mr. Hempton’s departure from Whangarei. Apart from his intimate business , connection with the town,. Mr. Hempton has taken a keen interest in public and patriotic work. He is succeeded by Mr. A. F. Thomson, late of Inglewood. Major Ivan T. Standish, who according to to-day’s cables has received the D. 5.0., is a son of the late Captain Standish, of New Plymouth. He received his education at the New Plymouth High School, and subsequently was sheep farming with his brother, Mr. M. Standish, in the Tarata district. Deciding, however, upon a military career he went Home for. training and later received an appointment in the Permanent Artillery in New Zealand. Some time ago he front Home and received an appointment with the Imperial Forces. Mr. E. F. Blundell, manager of the. New Plymouth branch of the Bank of New Zealand, retires on superanuation at the end of the present year. Mr. Blundell joined the bank on October, 16, 1873, at Nelson, so that be has now completed 42 years’ service. He has been in different branches of the bank in both islands. Twenty-seven years ago ho received his first branch, when he was appointed manager at Bulls. Mr. Blundell has been manager of the New Plymouth branch for some years past and during his residence here has made many friends, both in business and private life, and all will join in wishing him long life in which to enjoy his wellearned retirement. Mr.,, and Mrs. Blundell will continue to reside in New Prrmouth.

Gunner If. Av. Cole, of New _Plymouth. who is attached to the artillery of the Eighth Reinforcements, is spending final leave with his parents, Air. and Mrs. H, Cole, •A r eale..Road, AA’hilst in training at Trentham Gunner Cole received a severe kick from a horse, and was in hospital for two months. He speaks in high terms of the way he was cared for whilst an inmate of the institution, and says the regulation of the food other arrangements makes the hospital a homo away from home. The nurses, especially the 'military sisters, were kindness itself, and nothing Was top much trouble for them to do. Gunner Dole, who gave these particulars to a Herald reporter, stated that his views wore shared hv others, and they wished to make it known that the men who are now sent to hospital at Trentham receive treatment second to none, and could not be better cared for.
