OFF TO THE DARDANELLES.
Where are you off to, Charley P Where are you off to, Bill ? Why, bli’ me, we’re off to the Dardanelles, or else to that “Sixty” Hill; We go into camp to-morrow, and we hope that it won’t bo long Before we are doin’ our own little bit to help for to right a wrong. , Yes, right you are, it’s just as you says, I’m a man of peace, I am, But I can’t see as ’ow bein’ peaceful pays when the other side don’t care - a damn. And Charley here, he argufies, and he’s pointed it out to me That we have only led peaceful lives ’cause Britain commands the seas. And when coves you know as led peaceful lives have since met a warlike death, Well, it’s up to each one to shoulder a gun as long as he’s got any breath. There was poor little Benno, the redheaded kid as used to go round with the “Sun,” When he told his ma ho was goin’ to the war, she thought it was only for fun. But “Ginger for pluck” as they always say—and his heart was as hot as his head— And now to-night when I opens the .“Sun,” there’s his name—Private Robinson—dead. Now that there youngster has lost his life, and who did he lose it for? Why, it’s clear as can be; lip lost it for me, and for you, and tno covo next door. And it don’t feel nice for a fellow to know that another’s been killed for him; It’s time to be up and doing then, without thinking of life or limb. Well, so long, matey, we’ve got to get —the fun’s agoin’ to begin. I haven’t got time to talk to yon now; but I’ll write to you—from Berlin. —C.H.C., in Wimble’s Reminder.
