LEARNS THE FOLLY OF SMUGGLING. ?EE PEEE3 ASSOCIATION. - AUCKLAND, Sept. 7. * William Frericks, of Gisborne, a passenger by the Niagara from Sydney, was charged at the Police Court with having attempted, to smuggle a gold and diamond brooch, apparel, etc., of the total value of £ls 19s lOd, on which a duty of £l6 was payable. Defendant stated that ho was unaware that duty had to be paid on any of the articles. He had no intention of defrauding the Customs. He was the owner of several farms near Gisborne and was in good circumstances. Mr. Cutten, 5.M.,. said he would have to convict defendant, and imposed a fine of '£2s, adding that the goodvwould be forfeited:
