MANAWATU SHOW.

OPENING CEREMONY. SPEECH BY MR. MASSEY. FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., Juno 22. The winter show was opened by Mr. Massey, who congratulated the people on its being a record. Go staled that sonic parts had suffered from want ol rain during the season, but notwithstanding that the exports had increased by eight millions sterling during the hist tw'o years, due to the country’s prosperity, which depended mainly on the laud. During tire season several difficulties had to he contended with, such as shortage of ships. Mr. Massey said that seventeen insulated ships were at present on their way to Now Zealand to take frozen foodstuffs, but still there were 20 shiploads waiting to bo shipped. Since the beginning of the war the shortage of cereals, especially oats, was serious. He had been blamed for not buying the fanners’. wheat at about os a bushel, but that would have meant that fanners would have, made butter or something else, and the result would have been more serious. Among the results in competitions were the following;—

Field roots (Sutton and Son’s silver shield). —Most points were won by A. Passey (Pohangina). F, A. Faker (Blenheim) won tho points prize in the farmers’ rtaxses for seed and grain. The points ])rizo for grass seeds wenj, ; to Henry Evans (Masterton). Vegetables points prize, F. AVestbury (Taita). Points prize for fruit, J. Cushing (Hawko.’s Bay). Champimf case export honey, li. J. H. Nicholas (Hawcra).
