MEAT FOR EXPORT.
SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. Up to and including June 17, the New Zealand Government have paid for meat purchased on behalf of tho Imperial Government £2,034,508. As payment is made on shipment, ' this money has been paid only for moat actually dispatched, or now loaded on steamers to sail. There must bo more than £2.000,000 worth of meat in stores in New Zealand ready for shipment. In view of tho cry that is being raised in some localities most recently in Auckland, about tho allocation of space in outward steamers, it is interesting to note tho storage rapacity available in tho principal frozen meat districts. This is as follows:—Mollington. G 75.000 carcases; Canterbury, 010.000 carcases; Otago. 165,000 carcases; Southland, 310,000 carcases; Hawke’s Bay, 230,000 carcases; Poverty Bay, 280,000 carcases; Auckland, 55.000 carcases. These figures indicate tho capacity of tho storage space under normal conditions. In this last season necessity has compelled tho companies to pack the stores as densely as possible, even filling up passages, so that the stores have in many instances actually hold tens of thousands more sheep than they wero built to hold. Ladies who appreciate high-grade tailoring should not fail to read Mr. 11. Cocker’s advertisement in this issue. Air. J. J.
