AIONTHLV MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Board of Education was hold on Wednesday afternoon, when there were present: Alessrs. H. Trimble (chairman), G. A. Adlam, J. Young, R. Ai,asters, A. AI. Bradbury, A. Alorton, F. J. Alackay, and E. Alarfell. Air. A. 11. Halcombo was granted leave of absence. VOTES OF SYAIPATHY. Before the business of the meeting was commenced, the following resolutions, referring to tho death of soldiers from this district, wore carried in silence, tho members of the board 5 standing;— “That the board tenders its deepest sympathy to Air. Alarfell on the death of hjs son.” “That the board tenders its deepest sympathy to Mrs. Dewinrst on the death of her son.' 1 In moving the second motion, Mr. Morton stated that Airs. Dewhirst was lor Iff years in the employ of tho hoard, and her son was educated in Taranaki, being about eight years in tho Kgmont Village School, and then going to (he » Stratford District High School, where 1 he was a very brilliant scholar. ? CHAIRAIAN’S REPORT. The Chairman reported as follows; Kaimata. —The senior inspector has 1 reported that an addition. 22ft. x 10ft., is required to the Kaimata School. 1 recommend that application bo made to the department for a grant for carrying out the work. Bell Block. —In accordance with the i senior inspector's report, I recommend I . that application he made to the depart- • meiu for a giant for erecting a parti--1 tion in this school. 1 Kgmont Village.—The senior inspee- - tor reports that in his opinion at present there is no need to pm in a partition. but that an enlargement, of tho curtain will meet the requirements. The report was adopted, i CENTRAL SCHOOL. i > The chief inspector (Air. W. A. Bali lantyno) reported that at Air. Demp- • spy’s request he had again gone into . the question of removing the platforms in the largo room on the western end i of the Central School. If this were 1 done the desks could probably bo rearranged to make the room more suitable for teaching purposes. The cost, l.e understood from the overseer, would be about .i'll. The platforms in No. 1 room had lately boon removed, and this I bad enabled the desks io bo rearranged to much better advantage. Ho therefore recommended that the necessary i alterations he made in the lafgo room. The report was adopted. ■ ELECTIONS OBJECTED TO. Air. A. D. Beauchamp wrote objecting to tho election of tho Carrington School Committee on the grounds that one of the members elected. Air. H. Shaw, was not a resident of the district, nor was ho a householder. He also complained that desks were al- , lowed to remain outside after a dance 1 on April 30. Both matters wore referred to Air. Bradbury to inquire into and report on. Mr. A. A. Churchill also wrote to the effect that Mr, Porrott, who was elected to the Hnirna Committee, was : not eligible, as he resided outside the 1 district. It was resolved to inform the eom- - mittee that Air. Porrott was ineligible to sit on tho committee, and asking them to nominate a householder in his place. SCHOOL COMMITTEE .MATTERS. The application from the Stanley Committee for a grant towards fencing and preparing the ground for a school garden was referred to Air. Mnckay with power to act. Air. G. A. Adlam reported that he had visited the Pitone School site with the members of the romniittoc. After searching some time they had found two pegs, but could not find two corner pegs. These would he found later. The sito chosen was fairly level and dry. Tho committee had agreed lo fell and burn two acres of hush, watch the school during burning, stump and clear a sito of one and a quarter chains square, and remove the school to that site for a sum of £lO 10s. This he recommended.—The report was adopted. Air. Alarfell, reporting on tho application of the Toko School Committee for the uso of tho closed road abutting on its west side, recommended that tho land he leased from the Stratford Comity Council at a rental of Is per annum.—Agreed to. In accordance with a resolution passed at the annual meeting of householders, the Stanley Road Committee also applied for a teacher's residence and a resident teacher.—ln answer to this letter it was resolved to inform the committee that tho department had notified the hoard that grants for resi- 1 deuces were- held in abeyance, and that it would bo useless applying either for grants for new buildings . or additions to tho present residences during the war. It was decided that tho Kaimirb School Committee he granted a £ for £ subsidy towards levelling tho grounds, the board’s grant not to exceed 30s. The following matters wore referred to the chairman: —Matau Committee’s application with regard to school • grounds ; Waituni, shelter shod. NVilson. head teacher; Upper Alangorei, Aliss L. Williams, solo teacher; Okato. Aliss R. - Hunt, assistant; and he had appointed Mrs. Alartin serving teacher at the Alaknliu school from A lay 28. The inspe.ctor’s recommendations as to teacher’s appointments were adopted as follows: —Alias Lorca Williams, sole a

teacher. Upper Alangorei; Airs. Butehler. sole teacher, Alangahume; Miss Colina Robertson, assistant, York. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer (Air. C. H. Aloorc) presented the following report: — Tataraimaka.—We arc well on with the now classroom and general alterations—the whole of the work should bo ” finished within a week. In regard to the residence, it would be a great convenienoe to move out the back wall of the kitchen. 1 would recommend that I* this bo carried out. The cost would ■ not exceed £l2. , Douglas.—We shall be able to make a .Mart with the additions at the Douglas school in about a 'fortnight. 1 would suggest that the committee be asked to make arrangements to hold the school entirely in tho hall during the altcra- ” lions. Tho committee luivo undertaken to excavate for the foundation, and j will probably bear half cost of same, j Te Kiri. —As instructed, I have inspected tlie residence and surrounding fencing. In regard to the fence, J have authorised the necessary supply of - material to enclose the garden part, the teacher to Had tho labour. Tlie renovating of die inside of tho residence 1 will be attended to when the general painting, repairs are carried out. The • teacher is satisfied with this arrange- ’ meat. - .Awatuna. —As instructed. I visited ’ this school in regard to the chimneys [ smoking. I would recommend rcvolv- ’ mg cowls as the most likely to obviate i the nuisance. Cardiff.—As instructed, 1 visited this school and residence, an T f with the headmaster went into the matters referred to. As a result. 1 would recommend • that a small scullery be built between 1 i'tlic bathroom and the back porch : also , make necessary alterations to tho drainage. The wash-house to bo moved fur- > thor away from tile back of tlie residence. In regard to the tubs and copper and front fence, 1 am only able to > recommend that the board pay half the I cost of the tubs and copper and fix them in tho wash-house, the same to ■ become tho hoard’s property. 1 would recoin mend that wire netting only he provided for tho short length of fencing j in front of Hie residence to protect the hedge. ■ Durham.—l have also inspected the stove at the residence, and have arranged to have tho necessary repairs attended to. Radnor.—The stove pipe has been further extended. I would point out to the committee that stove must be kept free of soot to draw well. General.—Owing to tho short time since last board meeting I have had to hold over several matters. I have plans in hand for a school at Radnor and a building to accommodate tlio agricultural classes at Stratford. I submit a list of prices supplied for extension ladders. I propose to order in lots of 12 as niay be required. In regard to Bell Block shelter shod, L would recommend that the committee be allowed to extend tho same on the usual seale. Tlie report was adopted GENERAL. Tho loiter from Mr. W. Dowds, applying for a lease of portion of the Unit; school sito, was referred to the Uruti school committee for its remarks. Notification was received that Air. S. Williams had been appointed a member of the Albert Road committee, in place of Air, On- (resigned). The teacher at Cardiff will bo informed that tho hoard regrets that the department does not supply funds for tho purchase of washing tubs and bailors. The Now Plymouth Sash and Door Factory Company’s tender for school furniture was accepted for a term of two years from July 1, Ifflo. In reference lo a alto for a school at Radnor, Air. R. Alustcrs reported that he was of the opinion that a sito situated on the corner of the Cardiff and Radnor roads, containing about 2) acres, owned by Air. J. Vickers, was tho most suitable one, Tlio priee was £4O per aero.—lt was decided that application bo made to the department for a grant for the purchase of this site. Air. N. B. Friday was granted a lease of section. 3, block 5, Ngaero S.D., for a term of 10 ’.cars, at an annual rental of 10s per acre. Mr. Masters gave notice to move at the next meeting of the board that the resolution carried at tho Alareh meeting regarding advertising be rescinded. The chairman was authorised to affix the board’s seal to the, memorandum of transfer of section 21, block 0, Ngatimarn S.D. Alessrs. D. J. Hughes. Chan. Warren, and H. AVilliamson, a committee appointed hy the residents of Spotswood. 1 submitted a petition containing the names of 71 children, and asked tho i board to favourably consider tho nccos- ! site tor taking steps to purchase a '■ school site at Spotswood, with a view ’ to erecting a school thereon as soon as 1 funds were available.—Tho petition was 1 referred to Alessrs. Adlam and Trimble f to report on at next meeting. i Mr. P. S. AVhitcombe reported that 1 he had audited all tho school commit- r tec’s accounts with the exception of i Awatuna and Alakahn.
