TAUMARUNUI.

FROM Of II OWN tORRESI'ONDKNT. March 21. —Things have been rather slack in the labour market tor the last two week'. Government monies are insi on the ove of the new year, and until March i'l there is practically nothing doing. There is plenty uf hush to bo tolled in me winter, but it is Father early yet. Several large busn contracts are’ being formulated. The milling industry is working about normally. no new hands being taken on. Munieipal matters arc likely to take an unusual turn; his. Worship Mr. Waekrow, the present Mayor, can't see his way clear to seek re-election, owing to pressure of business ca hand. r lhis means a great lors to the town. Mr. Waekrow is a gentleman who is very hard to replace. Mr. Simmons lias consented to bo nominated, and 1 hope this gentleman’s long experience as an old resident will recompense tho council towards tho loss of Mr, Mackrow. I am told that men of groat experience, and those who can be usefuhin bringing on the town, do not seem to bo disposed to shoulder local affairs. The Uev. .1. Ward is about to take a tour of the Dominion on a mission in connection with tho Presbyterian Church. At the last council meeting, when the Rev. Mr. Ward notified his coming absence, the council wished him a successful trip, as this is Ids lirsC holiday for over eight years. Tho local tootball club hold its annual meeting during tho ‘week, and formed a chib for the coming season. Mr. Johns was re-elected lion, secretary for a .second term. The local lire brigade arc threatening to chuck in their marble, owing to some reflections cast, on them at the council table, but a little explanation on the matter has remedied the grievance.^ A young American who clothed himself with The overcoat ot the proprietor of the Junction Hotel (prior to leaving tho town), did not manage to get further than tho railway station, when the long arm in blue enuglit him: tho verdict was one month or €5, and the latter not being available he had no alternative.

A movement is on foot to resurrect the old racing club of Tanmnrumii. and ns the town is decidedly entitled to a permit a large number of citizens called a meeting for next Yt ednesday. Mr. Lane, editor of the Now’ Zealand Herald, was here during the week having a. look round. There are no further fever cases to report, and no more now'-born Indian half-caste Maoris.
