BOWLING.
BANNER COMPETITION FINALS. The final matches in the Taranaki Centre banner competition were played on the Stratford green on Wednesday between the Hawera, Opunake, and New Plymouth Clubs, the winners respectively of the Southern, Western, and Northern sections. The weather turned out unexpectedly fine, the wind only occasionally causing a little trouble, and the green was in good order. Hawera having drawn the bye, Opunake and New Plymouth played off first in the morning, the match resulting in an easy win for the latter by 03 to 39, but in the afternoon a much more exciting match was witnessed, New Plymouth, just managing to win by one "point—s 7to 56—against Hawora. Parkinson, president of the Hawera- Club and vice-president of the ventre, handed over tile banner to Air. Penn, president of the Now Plymouth Club, and congratulated the winners on retaining the banner/ On his call three cheers were given for tho winners. Mr. W. C. Dudley, president of the Opunake Club, added his congratulations to those of Mr. Parkinson and took tho opportunity of thanking the Stratford Club for placing their green at the disposal of the centre for playing tho finals. He called for cheers for the Stratford Club and also for the Stratford ladies who had dispensed afternoon tea. Mr. Penn, on taking charge of the banner on behalf of his club, thanked the previous speakers for their kind congratulations. He would rather have liked to see Opunake win the banner, but the final game was one worth winning. He also thanked the Stratford Club for the use of their green, which had played surprisingly well. At his call cheers were given for tho runners up and so ended the banner competition for 1914. The banner was won by Hawera in 1912 and bv New Plymouth in 1913. Comment on tho play is reserved till Saturday.
