Mr. Walter Bewley left this mornin" for Wellington, en route for England. He catches the Mongolia at Sydney, and expects to he away about nine months.

General regret was expressed at the Education Board to-day at the illness of the secretary (Mr. P. S. Whitcombe). The .chairman was empowered to grant as long leave of absence as may be necessary.

The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, who has been touring the Akitio coastal district, arrived at Pahiatua on Tuesday afternoon, and was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Crewe) on behalf of the citizens. He left later for ’Eketahuna. • •

At Tiraaru on Tuesday night,, the' Eev. J. Featherston, Methodist minister, was presented by his congregation with a purse of sovereigns. His wife was presented with a brooch. Mr. Featherston has been transferred to Inglewood. On Tuesday a Maori war veteran, named John French, died at the Old Men’s Home. Ho was 71 years of age. In the war time he was a member of Major Atkinson’s Bushrangers, and fifty years ago to-day was at the taking of Kaitaki, in Captain Good’s company. Captain Black secured the war medal and pension for Mr. French only two months ago, and he has not survived long to enjoy the pension. The funeral will take place on Thursday, and veterans are requested to meet the cortege at the cemetery gate at 2 p.m. At a recent meeting of the council of Ormond Presbyterian College, one of the three residential colleges connected with Melbourne University, representing respectively the Anglican, Presbyterian and Wesleyan denominations, Professor D, K. Picken, M.A., Victoria College, Wellington, was elected master of the college, the election being subject to the approval of the General Assembly in May. Professor Picken graduated M.A. at Glasgow with firsts class honours, winning the Metcalfe Fellowship. He then preceded to Cambridge, where he graduated _as sixth wrangler in 1902. After acting as assistant Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow for five years he was elected to the .position of Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics in New Zealand. Professor Picken is the author of several mathematical publications. He will take up his new duties at the beginning of 1915.
