CRICKET.

THE SENIOR. COMPETITION. Weather conditions were ideal for the continuation on Saturday of the North Taranaki Cricket Association’s senior competition. The fnatcJi between Now Plymouth and Tikorangi was unfinished. while Law defeated United Service. UNITED SERVICE r. LAW. One of the most exciting finishes this season was provided in the meeting of the above teams on the Sports Ground. Law had first strike and compiled 155 runs. United Service had seven wickets down for 141 runs, then two more wickets fell rapidly, and the position fas announced by the scorers) was nine for 132. The last wicket partnership had, therefore, to make four runs to win. with five minutes left for play. Amidst the greatest excitement, three runs were added, and then one of the batsmen was run out. This would have left the match a draw, but on a recount being mado of the score-book it was found that Service had scored only 152. leaving Law the winners by three runs. Bewley and Lash started for Law, and runs came slowly at first. Then the batsmen became properly set, and ten after ten was hoisted. Seventyfour runs were on the board before Osborne got a fine ball past Rowley. Rilling then partnered Lash, but the latter did not stay long after his first partner, hitting one hack to Osborne in the next over. Snell survived one hull, and was then bowled by Osborne. Elliott joined Billing, but the newcomer did not last long, Osborne soon getting one past him. Ron. Quilliam then came on the scene, and opened his scoring account with some vigorous hitting. Billing’s stumps wore scattered by a good ball from Osborne, and the same howler .secured his sixth wicket by bowling Reg. Quilliam next ball. The tally six for 132. Johnston and Ron. Quillinm made the pace lively, fours being frequent. Quilliam lifted n nice one on to the terraces for six. and a brisk rate of scoring went on until Quilliam was run out. The three remaining batsmen failed to swell the total, ami Johnston carried his bat for 16. The attack had been well handled, ami the frequent changing of the six bowlers no doubt worried the batsmen. Bain and Osboine had most to do. the former howling 16 overs, and the latter 17. Both kept a splendid length, Osborne particularly hailing a day out, and capturing seven wickets. The total was 155.

United Service had nearly two hours in which lu roach Law's total, ami groat interest was felt in their efforts. Colvile and M‘Gic opened to the bowling of Lash and Elliott. Runs were made .steadily, Colvilo including a sixer in his score. With 29 up M‘Gio was run out through a misunderstanding with his parfner. Sumner was the newcomer, and ho immediately hit two consecutive sixers. Scoring then became slower, singles being in the majority. .Sumner played one on from Elliott. and Ram joined Colvilo. Twenty-four runs were added, and then Elliott bowled Bain with a fast bail. Osborne saw seven more runs made, and then he was beaten by a good length ball from Billing. The score was now four for HO. Ingram partnered Colvlle, who was still hatting very carefully. though lie gave two or three chances. Ingram received a nasty smack on the eye from a ball from Elliott, and was bowled in the- next over by Ander.-son. Five for 113. Brabant hit one to the boundary, and a bye brought the score up to US. Here Brabant was well caught by Elliott, and , Newall joined Colvilo. The baiting became much steadier. Colvilo conlining his attention to singles and couj.les. The score reached loti, and then eleven runs later. Elliott, who was almost unplayable in a shadowy light, bowled Colvilo. Mewton and Nowall raised the Score to 145 before the former fell to Elliott, and the greatest excitement was felt when Cargo joined Ncwall. According to the score-book, eleven runs wore required for a win. with as many minutes in which to play. A three and a single to Cargo, and a single and a two to XewalJ, and thou Cargo played too late to a well-pitched ball from Lash. The score-books now made the score 152, when Colson, the last man. wont in. The batsmen notched a single each, these being the only ones . scored in two overs. It was thought that Service wanted only two more to . win. and excitement was at boiling point. A leg-bye went whizzing past the slips, and the batsmen notched one run. and Colson hesitated in attempting another run. Then Nowall ran. and Colson made a great struggle to reach the other end. However, the hall was thrown in smartly, and Quilliam had the bails off half a second before ho reached the crease. This made the result a draw, but. as said before, the proper score was only 152. The fielding of tho Law men was not good, but the bowling was good throughout. Lash and Elliott did most of tho trundling, tho latter securing the majority of the wickets.
