HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

'MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board on Monday there were present Messrs. E. Dockrill (chairman), W. N. Ewing, G. Grey and Eyre Kenny. PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS. BOYS’ SCHOOL. Tho principal of the hoys’ school (Mr. W. H. Moves) that since the new term had opened on September 8 two new, boarders and one new day boy had entered. During tho holidays tho first and second fifteens and the members of tho shooting team had journeyed to Palmerston North in order to take part in the annual tournament. Both ilf teens were successful in their matches against Palmerston North, but tho senior fifteen was defeated by Napier by one point; The shooting match was won. by New Plymouth, and he was pleased to state that tho conduct of the boys was all that could bo desired. Mr. Moyes also reported that in the competition for tho Imperial Challenge Shooting Shield th© school gained 29th place, coming well up amongst tho prize-winners. Nelson College was the only New Zealand school to take a higher place, and as this was tho first year in which tho school had entered a team, the result was highly satisfactory. At the end of the second term, Mr. H. H. Ward had severed his connection with the school. The vacancy had been temporarily filled by Mr. J. R. Sinclair, an old, boy of tho school. Mr. R. H. Rockcl, M.A., who had boon appointed classical and English master, would commence his duties on September 15. In connection with the staff,, ho drew tho board’s attention to tho opinion expressed by tho Inspector-General of Schools, Mr. G. Hogbon, on tho occa-, sion of his recent visit, that tho school was under-staffed. Inspection of tho timc-tahlo would show that another* master was badly needed. At present" it was quite impossible for the head-, master to sco as much of the work of tho various forms as he should. He should have at least on© free period in* the day in order to supervise the work of tho staff, whereas at present such, supervision could bo carried out only bv leaving one class without a master. Ho therefore asked the board to retain, the services of Mr. Sinclair till tho end'*of tho year. A resolution was carried expressing gratification at tho good conduct of tho boys, and congratulating them on their success in .football and shooting. It was decided that Mr. Moyes bo informed that the hoard cannot, owing to financial reasons, see its way to provide an additional master at the present time, but would probably consider tho. matter early next year. GIRLS’SCHOOL. ■ Miss C. D. Grant, principal of the Girls’ School, reported that the - term had opened with a full complement of teachers. Tho number of pupils on tho foil was 82, tho same as at tho end of last term, one girl having left, and another taking her place. A list of tho paying: pupils,'ls in number, was enclosed. . ' ■■ GENERAL. “ In reply to a request from , Mr. Moyes, !it was decided to purchase now matting for the cricket pitch. The passing for payment of accounts amounting to £4ll 2s 8d (£92 12s' Sd in connection with the boarding establishments) concluded tho business.
