WAITARA HARBOUR BOARD

MEETING ON FRIDAY, FEOM OtTE OWN COBEEEPONDENT. Tho monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbour Board was held on Friday evening, tho 12th. inst. There were present; Mr. IV. F. Jenkins (chairman) and Messrs. Ogle, Birdling, Hicks and Jennings. Tho Chairman stated that he had interviewed Mr. Buchanan in reference to the section that had been, purchased by him for 10s a year rental, and that Mr. Buchanan had declined to give up the section, stating that he had bought it at a public auction. A letter was read from Mr. Roy on the above matter, stating that as the board had not authorised the sale of the section that no lease could be given. Tho sale was void, and Mr. Buchanan has no claim against the board. Mr. Roy suggested that tho half-year’s rent that was paid he refunded.—Mr. Hicks moved, and -Mr. Birdling seconded, that Mr. Buchanan bo notified in the terms of Mr. Roy’s letter.—Carried, The board’s solicitors forwarded tho following leases for execution: Board to J. H. Kibby, and renewable lease of Club Hotel sections. IV. T. Johnston and Co.' forwarded cheque in payment for dredge and punts used while constructing new bridge, but deducted the amount of £2 5s for hire of punt, which they stated they did not use.—The secretary stated that the punt had not been used, by the contractors, but it was under their charge, and he had charged for same accordingly.—After a short discussion on the matter it was decided to allow Messrs. Johnston and Co. tho £2 5s which they had deducted from the account. ‘ Tho secretary stated that Mr. O. Bichono had renewed his lease of sections 10'and 12, block 19, Waitara East, for a further term of 21 years, ■ at a rental of £2 per annum. The Inspector of Nuisances wrote re two right-of-ways under the board’s control, and asked that attention, .be given to same.—Mr. Ogle stated that a portion of the right-of-way at the: back of his premises were being used as a .dnmping ground for rubbish. Resolved, that tho secretary write to tho Borough Council asking that body to have the rights-of-way r cleaned up, and that tho Harbour Board would pay cost of same.

Tho Minister of Marino .wrote acknowledging receipt of a letter from the hoard re the legality of Mr; Jennings’ seat as a member of the board, and in, reply to the same stated that tho matter ‘ has been referred to tho Crown Law Department for advice, and further, informed'the board that'Mr. Jennings is holding his seat illegally, and that the Crown Daw Department is now taking steps to haye_ Mr. Jennings removed from his position on tho board.

Tho Cement Pipe Co. wrote stating that persons aro removing shingle from the beach without paying royalty on same, and asking for assistance from tho hoard iii the matter. —The Chairman stated that ho had given instructions to advertise warning people against doing’so—Tho chairman’s ac-tion-was confirmed. „ The cadet in the office having notified his resignation, ,Mr. Ogle suggested that the appointment of another cadet should bo held over, and that the secretary bo at liberty to engage a casual if required.—A resolution to that effect was carried. . A resolution was carried instructing tho secretary to write to tho New Zealand Shipping Co. to make inquiries re the handling and dumping of wool for tho coming season. Mr. 0. If. Dowsett, C.E., forwarded estimates and plans showing necessary repairs required to wharf near tho bridge.—Resolved, that tho Works Committee inspect the locality and decide whether same bo done in concrete or wood.

Mr. Ogle brought under the board’s notion the had state of a portion of the South Wall,'and suggested that repairs should bo done without delay.—The board decided to havo the necessary repairs done' immediately, same to bo carried out under the supervision of Captain Thompson. Captain Thompson asked that barometer be purchased for the office.—Request granted. , The shipping report and wharfinger’s report for the month of August were read.
