A London cablegram reports the death of Sir Frederick Eaton, secretary of the Royal Academy. A Wellington telegram states that Sir William Russell, who has not been well for some days, is reported to-day to be seriously ill. Dr. William Bateson, director of the John Innes Horticultural Institution, Surrey, and late professor of biology at Cambridge University, has been elected president of the British Association for Mr. J. Taylor, who has been accountant at the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand -and who has been transferred to the managership of the Manaia Bank, was tho recipient a leather-bound suit-case, suitably inscribed, from tho New Plymouth staff on Friday afternoon. Mr. E. P. Blundell, the. manager, made tho presentation, and referred in eulogistic terms to Mr. Taylor’s many sterling qualities, the recipient ■ liriefly responding. Mr. Taylor leaves for his new sphere on Tuesday morning. Mr. J. N. Flower, from the Rotorua branch, who succeeds Mr. Taylor here, arrives to-night.
