An interesting record of service as captain of vessels of the North German Lloyd fleet is held by Captain D. Hogemann, commodore of the_ company s fleet, who recently retired after 34 years’ service. It is given to few master mariners to boast of Atlantic trips undertaken over a long series of years without loss of life, and Captain Hogemann, 'while skipper on the North Atlantic Line, carried .3,000,0(X) people without losing a single passenger or sailor, and he travelled 3,000,000 miles. In the earlier par’; of his seafaring career he captained sailing _ vessels, and during, the Franco-Prussian War his ship was captured by the French, and lie himself was jv- prisoner, for seven

months. His skill in navigation and tho safety and speed of his North Atlantic trips have been frequently recognised, and he has been decorated by tho German Emperor,' tho King of Italy and tho King, of Sweden. Before sailing from New York on his last voyage Captain Hogemann was entertained at a banquet and was tho recipient of a handsome testimonial. TRANS-PACIFIC RECORD BROKEN. Tho fastest voyage yet made between Yokohama and Vancouver was accomplished last month by the CanadianPacific Railway Company’s liner Empress of Russia. With every indication that sho will break all previous speed records for tho trip and bring the Orient and tho Occident a full day nearer together, tho giant steel vessel on her maiden voyage was eighteen hours ahead of her schedule time. The entire voyago across tho North Pacific was completed in eight days and a few hours. The previous fastest voyago between Yokohama and Vancouver, 8.C., was made by tho Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Japan, which covered the distance in a little loss than eleven days. Tho usual passage between the cities is from twelve to fourteen days. Tho Maunganui, Moeraki, Talune, Victoria, Ulimarca, Wahinc, Ruahine, Makarini and Suffolk should bo within wireless range of Wellington to-night.
