ASSAULT ,ON A BARMAID. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. June 27. Francis Thomas Jones, a young man, resenting the action of a barmaid in a city, hotel last night in refusing to serve his companion with drink, abused her in filthy language. The barmaid threw a glass of water at him and he retaliated by throwing a jug at her. She was- badly cut on the face and stminned. Jones was before tho court to-day and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. A CHARGE OF SLANDER. GISBORNE, Juno 37. In tho case Wi Parairo, a Native clergyman, v. Mcretinl To Ariki Hnka, a Native woman, a claim for .-€5Ol for slander, defendant, replying to tho judge, withdrew the idea of justification and expressed regret. The case was dismissed without costs. Hi'. Honour congratulated tho parties on the happy ending, and tho clergyman on clearing his character.
