DEPUTATIONS TO MR. HERBIES. Per Press Association. TIMARTJ, May 1. Mr. Berries, Minister for Railways, in the course of his tour of inspection of the southern lines, reached Timaru this afternoon. Ho opened the new Ambulance Hall with appreciative io •marks on tho value of the brigade work. A deputation of business men waited, on the Minister to ask for improved facilities for working trucks on the wharf; also the enlargement of the passenger station and the shunting yard. Mr, Hemes promised that the officers accompanying him shall inquire into the matter of wharf facilities. As to enlarging the station, that depended on whether a special loan could be raised for such .purposes. He must await Mr. James Allen’s advice on the subject. The deputation pointed out the inconvenience of the twopence charge to enter the platform. when the expresses were in, as it was difficult to. get/ tickets, and asked that an annual ticket be issued at a reasonable rate. The Minister thought this a reasonable request. A deputation of the Navy League asked lor an excursion train from Waimate to Lyttelton to convey South Canterbury school children to Lyttelton to see the .-warship if rough weather prevents their seeing her at Tim am. The train was • promised if really desired. There, will bo other deputations to-morrow morning, and then the Minister will inspect the Fairlie line.
