DELIBERATE MURDER.

SYDNEY, May 1Sergeant Edwin Hickey and Constable Barclay went to St. Ives to serve two commitment warrants upon Thomas Edwin Brown, orchardist, aged 50. They found Brown at the foot of his orchard. When he learned their business he invited tho officers, to come into the house. ' The trio walked there chatting amicably.. , Brown led the officers into the sit-ting-room, and then, turning round, asked what they meant by coming to his house, and ordered tjjom out. Constable Barclay told Brown to consider himself under arrest. The members of the family then entered the room. Constable Barclay attempted to seize Brown, and one of the sons got between them and pushed Barclay away. Sergeant Hickey jumped towards Brown, and 'was almost touching him when three shots rang out in quick succession, and a fourth a little later. Sergeant Hickey collapsed immediately, with three bullets in his stomach. The fourth struck the son's wrist. Sergeant Hickey died on the way to the hospital. Brown was to-day charged with murder, and remanded. Ho has attracted considerable public attention of late years owing to his persistent appearance at the Supreme Court and other .courts as a litigant. He filed affidavits ,on various occasions alleging corruption among the judiciary, law officers and a number of high officials. Sergeant' Hickey was a native of New South Wales, and , was aged 52. He! joined the service in 1831, and was generally well liked. He was tactful and very highly esteemed by his superior officers. - THE ARREST OF BROWN. ■ (Received May 2, 9.50 a.m.) .
