LONG-DISTANCE TELEPHONES. Pot Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 10. A deputation, introduced by Mr. R. Heaton Rhodes, waited upon the Hon. H, G. Ell this morning in regard to the recent increase in charges for longdistance telephones. Mr. Ell explained that the increase had been made because the old rates did not pay the department. With regard to the increase being made retrospective, he promised to look into this aspect of the question. THE GREEN ISLAND MINE. DUNEDIN, May 10. In regard to the mining dispute at Green Island, the difficulty caused by the refusal of Mr. Christie to employ any men unless the strike is declared off has been smoothed over, and the original agreement as to the employment of the men will be adhered to, thus ending the trouble. HAURAKI PASTORAL LANDS. THAMES, May 10. The Hon. J. Colvin received several deputations to-day. The principal matters urged were the opening up of the Hauraki pastoral lease lauds, estimated at nearly a quarter of a million acres, for settlement. These lands are situated on the Hauraki goldfields, quite distinct from the Hauraki Plains lands. The. Minister was also urged to have a flying survey made of the Kopu-Pokeno railway, and to subsidise the construction of a ferry over the Thames River and a bridge over the Pia-ko River. Mr. Colvin will bring these matters before Cabinet. He left to-day for Paeroa. PHARMACY EXAMINATIONS. WELLINGTON, May 10. The monthly meeting of the Pharmacy Board of New Zealand was held this morning, Mr. F. Castle presiding. The examination results gained by can- | didates at the examination held last month were considered. The following candidates passed the examination Section A —Auckland: E. P. Cooney, V. • W. Jones. Wellington; R. G. Fear. Dunedin: A. Dixon, A. D. M'Lennan, R. E. Lawrence. Section B —Auckland: J, T. Peate, E. Bond (partial), J. E. Prentice, R. Spratt, E. F. Isley (partial). Christchurch: P. E. Allison. Dunedin: J. R. Thompson.
