The match between the Australians and Northamptonshire commenced in hot weather. The attendance was moderate; the wicket was good. Smith, Witty, Webster, and Hazlitt were not included in the Australian team. The Australians batted first, Gregory and Bardsley facing East and Thompson. Wiien the total had readied 56, Barnsley played on to Smith, whoso bowling had made him uncomfortable all along. Gregory had scored 32 in fortyfive minutes. Macartney partnered Gregory, and a fine stand ensued.
