TRAMWAY COLLISION.

A NARROW ESCAPE,

Per Press Association.

AUCKLAND, May 7. Two trams collided going up Wellesley Street, which is a fairly steep grade, this evening. The motorman of tho foremost ear sustained very severe cuts on the face. Apparently a sliort circuit occurred in the control box of the leading car, and it commenced to run back. Motorman Saunders was unable to handle the brakes -in the forward portion of tile car through an electrical blaze. He promptly ran to the rear and applied the brakes. A collision, however, was inevitable, and both cars were badly damaged, Saunders being injured as stated. His promptitude in applying the brakes prevented a more serious accident, as both oars were filled with passengers, all of whom were thrown from the seats by the impact.
