TARANAKI HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the Taranaki Hockey Association will bo hold tomorrow. In presenting the tenth annual report tho committee desires to congratulate the members on the success of the 1910-11 hockey season in Taranaki. There were nine teams competing in the championship con test,. divided into northern and southern divisions, four playing in the northern division and five in the southern. The games were keenly contested, and tho attendance of the public showed that the game was taking on. The play-off for the championship between Inglewood and Stratford proved very interesting, as two matches had to bo played, resulting in Inglewood gaining tho shield. As regards representative matches, although only two matches were played, tho association must he congratulated on the stand made hy the representative teams, association sent a team to Wanganui to compete for the Norden Gup, but were defeated by two goals to one, after having to play tho extra time allowed for these matches. The Auckland Association sent a team to New Plymouth, with whom the match resulted in a draw, two goals each. During the season, in addition to the representative games and championship contests mentioned above, the committee held a hockey tournament at New Plymouth on Coronation Day, clubs from all parts of Taranaki competing. Fourteen men’s teams competed in the five-a-sidc tournament, and six ladies’ teams in tho seven-a-sids tournament. Races for ladies and men players lormed part of the programme, and, as -a very enjoyable day’s outing was spent, it is to ho hoped that tho association will continue this tournament. The Hawera clubs must be congratulated on winning both the ladies’ and men’s tournaments. The financial position of the association is satisfactory, there being a credit balance of £9 odd. It is to be regretted that tho Auckland v. Taranaki match was a failure financially, although with tho interest that the public showed in tho matches towards tho end of last season it is to be hoped that this season will prove more successful financially. The association has deposited with the Now Zoaland Hockey Association £2 2s, being tho deposit for the championship shield match with Wellington: As it was too late last season to play the match, this association has been granted first call on the Wellington Association for the challenge match this year. Tho committee suggests that a challenge be sent to the Wellington Association to have the match played on June 3. At the same time the opportunity should bo taken to return the visits of tho Hawke’s Bay and Palmerston Associations, and as there will bo excursion fares at that time it is to bo hoped that the best players will do their utmost to make the trip. The thanks of the association are extended to Mr. Corkill, president, Mr. P. N. Bundle, for acting as delegate to the Now Zealand Hockey Association, to tho referees who kindly gave their time to take charge of matches, and to tho press for the manner in which they reported the matches and general hockey news.
