John Casey, who committed a brutal assault on his wife three weeks after their marriage, has been sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with .bard labour, the Magistrate adding that if the man could not keep his hands oft hie wife, when intoxicated, he should leave liquor alone. Gore, hriokmakers, and their employees was settled to-day, the firm conceding the increase asked for, namely. Is per day to workers receiving 7s and 8s per day respectively. CONFERENCE OF GAOLERS. WELLINGTON, April 22. A conference of gaolers is now sitting in Wellington to consider prison administration. It was called together by Mr. Hanan to discuss with him a number of matters of importance in connection with prison work. The conference is purely departmental, and not open to the press.
