She was walking home at Glebe in the company of William Gilchrist. Two men accosted them and one asked Gilchrist what he was doing with his wife. He replied that he did. not know that she was married. Barker then proceeded with the string- ‘ ,crs. Gilchrist watched, and saw them stop outside a vacant allotment. The woman later climbed a fence, and walk- j ed off in the darkness. A few minutes ■ afterwards one of the men followed j her but quickly reappeared and spoke ' to his companion . and they hurried' i away. Gilchrist went in search of j Barker and found her dead body at the bottom of a dry stormwater channel. The only mark of violence was a fractured wrist. (
