CRUELTY TO POULTRY.
(To the Editor.) . Sir, —May 1, through your columns, express my admiration for.your charm, mg little town. Nestling sweetly amidst beautiful scenery, and with many and varied inducements, it is indeed an ideal holiday resort. You want,, however, a prohibitive act against a weekly horror and nuisance f which offends tho eye and senses of 1 even a cosmopolitan. I allude to the bunches of feathers and quivering f nerves delivered as “poultry'' at tho } marts. These poor creatures nro an | instance of tho merciless tyrannies of { tho stronger over the weaker. Two ) grown .ducks and three cocks wore i immuucd in an ordinary kerosene box I (space for but one ,nnd that for a short j (journey),, and in a nupright position. \ It is torture to a bird to debar free j movement of head and neck and limbs, j Others were strung together by the | legs, and thus dragged roughly* from i various vehicles and carried, often by 1 tho neck, into the auction rooms. I Here, let me say, sensible provision j in the way of space and air is pro- | vided. You wane a protection order ! for poultry to ensure transit under ; proper conditions. Boxes ought to ho ' not loss than >22 inches in depth for \ an ordinary-sized fowl, and a "certain space for a given number. Legs j should not he tied. So long as you j New Zealanders allow the pro-sent cow- i ardly torturing of tho impotent dumb, 1 you cannot brag of your reverence for freedom, nor honst of much emancipation from the state of primitive man. —I am, etc., COSMOPOLITAN.
