RE A BOROUGH COUNCIL WITHOUT A BACKBONE.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l much regret that anyone choosing the nom-de-plume of “Fair Play” snould write at this stage of the demands put forward by tho New Plymouth General Labourers’ Union to tho Borough Council. We have, we recognise, a stern fight in front of us, and up io the present the negotiations have been conducted in an amicable spirit on , both sides, jyicl will, I have no doubt, be so continued to tho end. On behalf of tho member?, of the union I wish to repudiate “Fair Play’s” letter, which is .likely to throw the onus of blame on to the union in the event of a disagreement being reached. We do not require ‘Fair Play's” assistance to fight our battles with the Borough Council of any other employer. Wo havo a cause we believe to he just, and have staunch men to fight for those principles, and I am pleased to say that not one of those men would write anything ho was ashamed to sign his name to. No, no, “Fair Play,” let’s have your surname. Ratepayers long ago realised that indiscriminate nonentities were not tho men to represent them as borough councillors.—l am, etc/ G. E. ROPER,. . Secretary New Plymouth General Labourers’ Union.
