URUTI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. B.—There was a meeting of settlers in the hall on Wednesday the Bth to consider the question of metalling the Uruti Road. Mr. R. M'lvenzie was elected chairman. A subsidy of £2OOO was granted by the Government three years ago for this piece of work, and it is considered that if a loan of £IOOO, £ for £, was raised, it would metal the road to the junction of the Moki Road. When the matter again came up for discussion there was an attempt to go for a £2OOO loan, but the Moki settlers seemed determined to-have one straight loan to the Moki Bridge junction, and after a great deal of discussion a motion was carried by a large majority that a loan he raised to metal the road to the Moki Bridge. Mr. C. Barnitt was elected secretary. This piece of road needs metalling, for the milk-cart traffic is far too heavy for sandstone. The road is now completely worn out, and I think rather than spend a large sum of money putting more sandstone on, the settlers are doing a wise thing in going in for metal, for then the upkeep of the road will be almost nil, and more monev will be available for some of the other roads which badly need it. Our friends up the Uruti Road seem to have had quite a stir in school matters, Some of them are quite kndignant over the actions of one who has had charge of the school affairs since it was first built.

The Clifton County election for the Mokau Riding caused a good deal of interest in these parts. Mr. O’Sullivan, •&e sitting member, was again out in the field, also Messrs. C. Muskcr, Bowers, and Sowry. Messrs. Sullivan and Bowers were elected. I am glad that Tongaporutu have managed to elect Mr. Bowers, for they have always been without a representative. He was well supported in Uruti, polling 33 votes, and the local men 40, 31, and 18 respectively.
