HOCKEY.

NOTES ON THE WEEK. The only matcli in the men’s competition of the North Taranaki hockey district this week was between Inglewood and Waitara. Played on -he former’s ground, it resulted in a wm for the home team by 4 goals to nil. Mr. T. W. Kolston held the whistle. There will be no less than 13 men’s matches and four ladies’ played in Wellington to-day. , In the southern division on Thursday Hawera A played Otakeho. The match ended in a draw, each side scoring 4 goals—rather a good game to'watch. On Thursday Stratford defeated Hawera Bby o goals to 3. It was a fairly fast and closely contested match (says tho Star). In,the first spell the visitors had perhaps the advantage all through, although Hawera defended very well. It was not until just on tho call of time that any score was obtained, when H. Cameron, for Stratford, shot a goal from a corner. In the second half of the match Hawera played up much better. It was not long before they had equalised the score. After some warm exchanges the scores were further levelled up, each side having sfiot an additional goal, Stratford succeeded in getting more goals, whilst Hawera were unable to increase their figures. By their win Stratford now lead by one point for the championship of the southern division. Stratford deserved their victory, for they played a really solid game." Had Hawera put a little more dash into their play it is quite possible that they could have at least made a drawn match. Stratford's goals in the second spell were got by L. Tocker (2) and Dudson (2). Pearce and Fryer (2) shot tho goals for Hawera, Mr. Pratt refereed impartially. The lust matches in the second round of tho ladies’ competition were played on Thursday, when Whakatika beat Tikorangi and Waitara accounted for Inglewood. This places the AA'hakatikas ahead in the northern division, they not having lost a match. Tikorangi are next in order with 6 points, three wins and three losses. AVaitara and Inglewood follow in that order. The play off (most probably with Hawera) will in all probability take place within a week or so. The game on the racecourse between AVhakatika and Tikorangi proved > a hard struggle. Neither side scored in the first half,, and a goal by Miss M, M'Bwen early in the second spell proved to be the only one of the match. Mr. J. K. Poton refereed. No particulars have come to hand of tho AA'aitara-Papakura game except that, played at Waitara, it ended in favour of the home players by 2 goals to nil. „ - „
