ELTHAM.

| (From Our Own Correspondent.) Jan. 2.—The holidays are now a thing ' of the past, at least those of the Christ- , mas and Now Year—and work will ' again follow. Holidays are a fine thing to have, in fact, yon can enjoy them, provided the weather is suitable and cash is plentiful. Round Eltham the ; farmers have had n good season and : prospects for a good autumn, and consequently they are spending very freely. To-day the sun was warm and a clear ; sky, but a high wind made it unpleasant. At Hawera the dust was more than a nuisance—it was blinding—and those who made a resolve this year to use nice language must have had some difficulty in keeping resolutions. In the past many train travellers have used excursion tickets for the mail train. Many tried to return from Hawera by mail, but before leaving the guards announced that no excursion tickets would bo allowed by, the train. Some cot out, hnt a few “wise” ones hold their seats till “tickets, please.” The excursionists wore then politely set down at the next station, Normality, where they kicked their hook) or played billiards till tho

late excursion train arrived. Tho mail train, consequently, was not too crowded, and travelling more a pleasure than usual at holiday times. Some Elthamitcs were growling today at having to start work. To-night there is at least ono man who wished ho had started toil, as he Ik- wait'd tho. fact that he had dropped £2O at tho Stratford races. Picking winners may he a difficult matter, but picking losers seems to bo much easier, though less profitable. The Eltham bowlers had a day at Pitzroy last Monday. They had a good day, a good time, and a good treating. Bowls seems to he very attractive and 1 notice quite a number of young bucks visiting the Eltham green bowling to the jack and coaxing kitty. Some of these days 1 hone to have a game of I Kiwis, and if they iced me well and other circumstances are favourable I shall score a something, but I hope not a “head.”
