RIFLE SHOOTING.

WELLINGTON MEETING. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Jan, 3. Sergeant Dodd, of the City Rifles, won tho open championship at the Garrison Rifle Association’s meeting with a score of 271. He also takes .tne champion bolt, being the highest aggregate scorer in the Wellington Garrison. Dodd also won the licensed victuallers’ cup for best aggregate at tho 200yds., 500yds. and 600yds. ranges, and the trophy presented for the highest aggregate at 800yds., 900yds. and 1000yds. The junior aggregate championship was won by Corporal Shannon, of Wellington Highland Rifles, his score being 349. Tho teams match was won by the Opaki Rifle Club with a score of 1209, The Highland Rifles, with 1196, wore second. SHOOTING NOTES. (By “Scout.”) Tho Taranaki marksmen attending tho rifle meetings at Taumarunui and Auckland have done fairlv well. At Taumarunui this part of Taranaki was represented by Privates Blanchett and Marett (Rifles), Colour-Sergcaht Hartnell'(Guards), Riflemen Speck, Hart, Jonkins and others. Private Marott won the Olmra Match, and all shot into the prize list. Owing to tho number of entries tho programme had to bo cut down to enable the competitors to finish in the two days. At Auckland the Rifles were reinforced by Lieutenant Willis, Sergeants Davis and Southern and Private Arnold, and as far as reports received go did fairly well. The team won tho Teams Match, which, in addition to the mono}’ prize, carries with it tho famous AV’aihi rooster. It is safe to say that this notable bird will not ho entered at any of the local poultry shows. Although his sentimental value is large, his intrinsic worth is about sixpence. Ho is made of sheet iron, ami is a brown or white Leghorn, according to the taste of the holders and the paint avail-; able. It is the first time ho has been won by the Rifles, though a team from Taranaki, consisting Of Corporal Armitago and Private Marott (Rifles), Lieutenant White, Sergeants Carey and Hulbcrt (Patea Rifles) won him five years ago.
