The New Zealand Herald gives the following account of the race for the Great Northern Derby:—AA’hen the numbers tvent up for tho blue riband, it was found that the scratching pen had been very busy, Birkdale, Formby, Master Theory, and Antoinette being withdrawn. Danube was; the first to come into the birdcage, and it required but one glance at Mr. Greenwood’s colt to carry conviction that Richard Mason had the son of Martian in great heart, his rich bay coat fairly glinting in tho sunlight. Goldfinder, who .showed no ill-effects from the severe races exacted from him on tho two preceding days of the mooting, carried a bright coat, while Domino, who was popularly reckoned out of his class,_ was well served on the score of condition. AVhon King Soult made his appearance on tho scone ho was found carrying boots on both forelegs, which, of course, pointed to a weak spot. Tho Soult coft, however, carried himself well, and when ho rattled off his preliminary’ there was little to find fault with ; but some hold that there was reason for anxiety in regard to the Soult colt seeing out a mile, and a half properly on a hard course, AVlv n backers got to work it was quickly demonstrated that Danube would rule an

oddfi-on fovonrito, and at tlio cloeo of speculation the machine figures showed a fairly largo difference lx;tween the amounts invested on the favourite and King Soult. Mr. O’Connor slipped the barrier directly the field lined up, and as the quintette struck the ground the red and yellow stripes carried by Danube were the first to catch the eye. Striding along in fine stylo, Danube was found currying the field along as the back stretch was entered upon, at which point the pace rapidly improved. King Soult, who endeavouring to get to the favourite, gave way to Goldfinder in between the six and five furlongs posts, and the San Fran colt was endeavouring to reach the leader all the wav across the top stretch. At one point there was only three-quarters or a length between Goldfinder and the favourite, but it was not hard to discern which colt was galloping host. AN hen heads wore in-a line for home it was soon that Danube was simply playing with his opponents, and without over once being asked to do his best, the son of Martian romped home an easy winner hy two lengths, Goldfinder filling the role of runner-up. It was undoubtedly a high-class performance for which Danube was responsible, and the Canterbury colt must now bo accounted to have fully demonstrated his right to the leading position amongst the three-year-olds racing in New Zealand this season.
