Mr. C. H. "Weston has been appointed one of the Government nominees on the New Plymouth Fire Board in succession to Mr. C. E. Bellringer, resigned. Mr. J. D. Adlam, formerly a contractor in tbo Waitara district, died in the Old People’s Home this morning. Deceased was a brother of Mr. G. A. Adlam, of Oakum. Mr. A. J. Petherick, of Wellington, has been appointed secretary of the Now Zealand Pawn Tennis Association out of fifteen applicants.—Press Association. At the Anglican Synod in Auckland, in the selection of a successor to Dr. Ncligan, there were several names mentioned, and the proceedings 'at the informal conference held for the purpose of making the selection very protracted, several votes having to bo taken before the selection of Mr. Maud was agreed upon about midnight. The Bishopelect (who has since declined the invitation) is spoken of as an eminent scholar and an able -preacher, with special abilities in missionary work, 'the Church of St.: Mary, -itedcliff, Bristol, is one of the oldest and most beautiful in England, and has already provided five bishops for Home and abroad., including the Primate of Scotland and Bishops of Glasgow and Pretoria. Mr. Maud is a prominent churchman in England, and was. one of the missioners at the conclusion of the Boer War. Archdeacon 0. C. Harper, of Palmerston North, was at one time his curate.
