CHARGES AGAINST BOOKMAKERS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 21. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., two persons alleged to bo bookmakers were charged with street betting in Wellington. One information charges William Ham that on September 23, being a bookmaker, ho bet in Willis Street. Samuel Isaacs was charged on three separate informations—(lj that on October 10, at Wellington, bo was in Willis Street for the purpose of betting ; (2) that on October 10, being a bookmaker, ho did by himself make a bet with one Thomas Jones in Cuba Street on the. Now Zealand Cup horse race to be run at Christchurch; and (3) that on October 1 he made a bet with Thomas Jones upon the result of a horse race, namely, Dreadicss in the Marangai Handicap, whereby he agreed to pay to Thomas Jones, the other party to the betting, if the latter shouldwin, a sum of money the amount of which was dependent upon the result of the working of the totalisator on the race.. Mr. E. J. Pitzgibbon, who appeared for both defendants, asked that tho cases might stand over till Friday next. He had, bo said, only been instructed yesterday, and he understood the Chief Detective had no objection. Chief Detective Broberg stated that before consenting he would like to have Isaacs called. The defendant Isaacs hardng made an appearance, the prosecutions were adjourned by cohsont until tho 28th instant. FINED FOR BETTING. AUCKLAND, Oct. 22. At the Police Court Henry Malcolm Nicol, one of the men arrested in tho police raid on the premises of Ryan and Degro.cn, was charged this morning with having betted on a horse race and assisted in the management of a common gaming house. Defendant admitted the first charge and was fined £2O and costs, the second charge being then withdrawn.
