PETROLEUM
Sir. Carter, adnng-ehairmau of the Taranaki Petroleum Company, iuforms ua that yesterday afternoon tho sandpumping operations at No. 3 well were huccessful 111 taking out all tho oil and water. At five o'clock, when work ceased, the well was absolutely dry tc the bottom. This morning, when work Was resumed, it was found that the oil reached 360 feet from the bottom. Tiie sand-pump was put down two or three times, and it was found that there was only a small proportion ot water — and that salt, — which is fairly conclusive proof that the water difficulty has been overcome in this bore. It is intended to drill a little deeper, in the hope of striking a larger flow of oil. The gas continues very strong. The directors TiopjT to be ablo to obtain a suction pump in about a fortnight. Another underground storage reservoir will be constructed nt once. ■
