l?y " Qnkaniba.") August 18." — On Tuesday evening ls;s>t tlie inlialtitants of Tniti and district enjoyed a very pleii'-ant entertainment, such an one indeed as ha& never before been presented tor their appreciation in their own to*n hall. It was the occasion of what one might almost tall « "variety evening," given on behalf of the library funJs. and the progiamnie . vliich proved to he an excellent on\ leflected great credit on the ladies who were instrumental in arranging it. On arriving at the hall the writer whs nt once struck with the tasty decoration.; and t'.e very pretty stage. Kwn nt that time, nearly an hour before the advertised time for commencement, the hull wns almost full, and before the curtain ro«e there was a dearth of seats. The first part of the programme was in the form of a concert, and a very enjoyable one it proved. Thpre was plenty of variety, and the singing was of a high order. Unfortunately, I was unable to sec are a copy of the programme, :ii!<l cannot therefore give the order of it or remember the names of f he singers; I* ut amongst those who are particulaily worthy of mention, and whose names I remember, are Mr. Stratton, of TonfjaI'orutn, who fairly brought the houie down with l.is comics; h:"d others are >'iss "Weils, slis* Kelly, the Misses M'Kenzie, T»ir. C. Musker, end Mr. B. AVel's. This was followed by a laughable farce, its only fault being that it was too short. AH the performers did their parts well, and considering that this was the first appearance of most of them in anything of the sort, they deserve unlimited praise for their successful efforts. Mrs. Pott was particularly j*ood. also Mr. Aroa, while Mrs. Kelly as the indignant husband was Al. At the conclusion of this event willing hands stripped tho decorations and removed the stage, while the ladies made tea and supplied refreshments to those who were fatigued with laughter. A dance was soon in progress, which, to judge by the faces of those taking part, proved as enjoyable as the earlier entertainments of the evening. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. George Jupp will regret to learn of the critical condition of their little son Bob. Mr. Wylie was pent for yesterday, and arrived shortly before' midnight, and it is hoped that the little patient will recover. Ho is at present under the efficient care of our district nurse, who fortunately arrived to-day. The Uruti creamery is expected to open shortly, and if indications go for anything, should have a {<ood season. Stock in the district are looking wail, and there is plenty of grass about. [We shall be glad to receive further communications irom our correspondent. —Ed. Budget. 1
