PUNIWHAKAU.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
j Preparations for tho Puniwhakau annual sports have bogun. Meetings have been held, Mr Maxwell being appointed secretary. With such a capable and energetic man the sports should be more successful than ever. It has been decided to hold them on April 2, «t> that th© various intending competitors in running, wood-chopping, etc., had hotter begin training. Tho election for the Licensing Committee passed off very quietly indeed. As there \yas so little to choose between tho candidates, it is a pity some of them did not withdraw and save the district the expanses of an election. The fine weather seems to give indications of corning to a close- We had one or two very slight showers last week and Saturday was very wet, but fine weather has again taken up the running. I hear there is to be a working bee to prepare the sports ground. All settlers interested are invited to attend on Tuesday week and lend a hand. Mr Gatton is sending out a consignment of fat lambs to Waitara [Freezing Works this week. I believe there are other settlers with Jorge numbers of fat sheep and lambs only waiti»g until the works has space to accommodate them.
