WAITARA RECATTA.

KESULTS OF THE CONTESTS.

In excellent weather the annual Taranaki Regatta was held on the Waitara River yesterday. The attendance numbered between 1000 and 1500 — rather less than usual. The decrease was mote noticeable amongst the Waitara people. The river was in excellent condition, and some very good racing was seen ; but on the whole the regatta was a very quiet one. There was nothing to amuse the spectators between the races, beyond two games of chance. The Taranaki Garrison Band was asked to attend, but could not do so owing to insufficient notice having been given. A greasy boom competition and a boys tub race, at the end of the programme, however, provided a little amusement. The only club from outside of Taranaki that competed in any of the events was the Union Boating Club (Wanganui). Unfortunately for the New Plymouth people who journeyed out to see the regatta, the outrigger events were ail over before the arrival of the special train from New Plymouth to Waitara, the first race having been started at .0 a.m. This had been doric in order that the whaleboat races could be held at a suitable state of the tide. During the afternoon the steamer Pitoitoi made a number of trips to the .nouth of the river.

The most successful club competing was the Clifton Rowing Club, which won £55 10s in prize-money. Tikorangi won £11* Union (Wangnnui) £8, and Mokau £1.

I The takings for the day amounted to £53 15s 9d, as against £68 16s lasi year.
