CRICKET.
L\ OPENING OF THE SEASON. i. The North Taranaki Cricket Association opened its 1908-9 season yesterday in excellent weather. On the whole the wickets were good. There were many indications in the matches that the season would be a very interesting one. The New Plymouth Club opened rather inauspiciously, both its senior teams being defeated. WAITARA V. NEW PLYMOUTH ROVERS. At Waitara the Rovers met with ft c crushing defeat. The wicket was a trifle - soft. Waitara won the toss, and going I in first did not improve the wicket for their opponents. The Waitara bowling !i was very deadly. A ball from Skelton smashed Arden's middle stump in two. Rovers played a man short. Ihe scores , tvere as follows: — WAITABA * W. Bayly, Ibw, b Colvile 4 i C.
