Sir.— Mrs Smith was, I behove-, at my meeting iri New Plymouth on Monday night iasl, and should know from all that I said that I was not referring to the- late Mr E. M. Smith at all. i was referring to and said "Governors," and tho men that I meant were Fitzroy, who cut down the 60,000 acres awarded to the New Zealand Land Company's settlers to 3200 acres, and Gore Browne, who plunged Taranaki into a ten years' ruinous war. Mr Smith and I always met on the most friendly terms, and I have alwayo been, and, for the matter of that, am, a constant believer that he sacrificed himself in his attempts to promote the industrial prosperity of Taranaki. Mrs Smith, holding the views she does as to my object in seeking to represent Taranaki ufr Parliament, is evidently prejudiced'against and too ready to think ill of me. '"Honi soit gui mal y pense." — I am, etc., W. G. M ALONE. WHY SO? (To the Editor.) Sir,— According to' the Works Committee's report, published in Saturday's paper, it is proposed that the Borough Council shall lease to a Mr Roberts a portion of the septic tank site in Gill Street at a rental of 10s per week/ subject to three months' notice on either side. This septic tank site cost the borough some £2000 or more, and th>e use of the surface area ought to be worth a great- deal more than 10s a week. I hope some Councillor will explain why this valuable property is being let in this hole-and-corner way, without publicity or competition. — I am, etc., AX INQUISITIVE RATEPAYER. A WOMAN'S QUERY. (To the Editor.) \ Sir. — Is it not an offence for a man to follow ynis usual trade or occupation on Sunday? If so, how is it that Mr Bruntnell is allowed to do so? For. I take it that auusing the Trade is his usual occupation* at least in Taranaki, and for which I presume he is paid. To me as a woman it does not seem quite fair that a man who is a gardener should be fined for attending to his plants on Sunday, when by not doiflgj so it may be a loss to him, and Mr Bruntnell is allowed to follow his trade j or occupation. He has six days in the week to abuse the Trade ; why not give] them a rest on Sunday? — I am, etc., I JANE ELLISMERE.. MASS MEETING AT THE PARK. (To the Editor.) Sir. — Kindly permit me, through the columns of your paper, on behalf of my Executive to thank the Pukekura Park Board and the chairman and secretary of the Sports Ground Committee for the use of tho Park for our Nolicense meeting, conducted by Mr Albert Bruntnell, ex M.P. of New South Wales, on Sunday afternoon. I feel certain, sir, that all who were present, be their opinion on the question of Nolicense hyhat i,t may, will unitedly agree that no more orderly meeting has ever been' held in New Plymouth. The pleasures of the meeting were greatly enhanced by the beautifuj surroundings of our magnificent Park,; and, notwithstanding the large attendance, no harm whatever has resulted to the Sports Ground. — I aril, etc., W. BIGELOW, Hon. secretary, Taranaki No-license League.
