PROTEST AGAINST THE OPIUM TRADE. ; Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. A motion relative to the opium traffic was discussed at the sitting of the Diocesan Synod this afternoon. After considerable discussion the following resolution was adopted: "That this Syndd desires to express its admiration of the way in which the Government and people of China are endeavouring to rid themselves of the terrible evil of opium. The Synod is deeply sensible of the national sin and disgrace in which the Indo-Chinese opium traffic involves the British Empire, and whilst thankful that in response to China's appeal for co-operation some means are now being taken to limit the export of opium from India, trusts that the British Government will exert the forces which it commands to terminate tile trade which the British House of Com*. mons has twice unanimously declared to be morally indefensible. M It was also resolved that the Bishop should be respectfully requested to forward a copy of this resolution to tlie Archbishop of Canterbury.
