(From 6ur Own Correspondent.)
August 13.— The Rifle Club held a basket social on Thursday night last. It was a great .success. Mr. Webster kindly officiated in soiling the baskets, which were well competed for. Mr. Malone gave a very interesting lecture on arms,' from the stone weapons to the present firearms, and a little of tho future. Messrs. Corkill and W. Mace were M,C.'s. Mr. Pater&on was at tho piano. A rifle match between Kaitako and Warea Clubs was fired on Saturday, soven men a-side. Warea won by one point. I hear Mr. Staite, landlord of the hotel, has sold out and is leaving soon. We wish him luck in his new undertaking. He and his family will be missed in the districtMr. Oxenham, I hear has sold out and will be leaving soon. He is one of our oldest settlers, and has been a good farmer and settler. His children have all grown up in tho old homestead at Tataraimaka. All the old settlers are gradually leaving the 1 arms to younger ones or new comers. A euchre party was held on Wednesday evening in aid of the Library. There was not a large muster, but those who did attend had a very enjoyable evening. Mrs. Penwarden won the first prize for ladies, and Miss West the second ; Mr. G. A. Adlam the first prize for men, and Mr. E. Julian the second. After refreshments the young people had a few dances. < The deviation at Oakura is nowclosed until the County Council can see its way to metal it. There is a small bit where it crosses the present road not quite finished, as the work would block the traffic. There are many complaints about the bfcnds lux tin? deviation, but I suppose it will eolne nil right when tho metal is oil.
