WeaHVlLliE, February 19. Bush fires were started again yesterday through the wind freshening. In the Manawatu Gorge the hills were ablaze formiles. A fierce fire is raging in' the bush near the freezing works, but no danger is anticipated. Tins morning the smoke has cleared from , the tbw,n the fires apparently having burnt tint. < *
Breaches of the* licensing laws were the subject of proceedings taken at Waitara S.M. Court this morning before Mr H. S. Fiteherbert. John Bertie, licensee of the Bridge Hotel, wag charged with haying unlawfully sold liquor to Paris Taylor when he was intoxicated and with having permitted [ drunkenness on his premises. Both ! offences were alleged to have been committed 'on Novomber 27 last year. Mr Quilliani appeared for Bertie, Mr Kerr for the Crown, and Sergeant Haddrell for the Police. Defendant pleaded guil- , ty. He was fined £5.
