WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) January 16. — The Coroner will hold the adjourned inquest concerning the death of the Maori Apehi on Monday next. Mr. Howson, of New Plymouth, has obtained the contract for the erection of«sth© Courthouse in Waitara. At a meeting of the Regatta Committee, the secretary was instructed to write to the Employers' Association and the New Plymouth Borough- Council asking that a holiday should be observed in New Plymouth on regatta day from 11-30 a.m. The Eltham and Ngaire School Committees are to be asked if they can arrange their annual excursion to be h,eld in Waitara on regatta day. Last year's train arrangements were adopted. For fighting in a public place on Christmas Eve three young men were fined 10s and costs at the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court on Wednesday by Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, S.M. For taking part in the discharge of an explosive, a detonator, on New Year's Eve, three young men were fined 10s and costs (7s). There was also a prosecution for wilful damage to a gig. The magistrate took a lenient vi'svr of the case, as the defendants had pleaded guilty and paid for the damage to the gig. * They were convicted and discharged on paying costs amounting to 7s each. > # Sitting in his civil jurisdiction, Mr. Filzherbert gave" judgment for plaintiff for amount claimed in the following undefended cases : — Clifton County Council v. S. .3. Briscoe and E. W. Marsh, .£3 4s 4*d rates (costs £1 18s) ; W. P. Snell v. Thomas Laurence £2 15s (costs 16s). There were two disputed claims for rates. The first was Clifton County Council v. Esau and Sarah Marsh, for £2l 6s 3d rates on 260 acres. Mrs. Marsh stated that she only had 200 acres. The Magistrate said he would have to non-suit tho Council for the excess claimed. Judgment would bo £16 8s 8d with cost 3. In the case of Clifton County Council v. Sarah. Marsh and others, claim £17 6s 3d for rates on 211 acres, Mrs Marsh said there was an excess of acreage. Th© Magistrate adjourned the case in order to enable the Council to search and produce the title. .
