AN IMPORTANT DEAL.

AUCKLAND, July 27.

A somewhat important shipping deal took place this week. The Ford Ship*ping Line, Ltd., purchased the whole of Mr George Niccol's fleet of scows, including one now building. The Ford Line will now consist of twelve of the most modern and up-to-date timbercarrying scows. The vessels purchased include the Curlew, Gauriet, Seagull, Ranger, and Moa (now building). The^-Ford Line has contracted with the Kauri Timber Company for the carriage of all their timber from coastal ports to Auckland for a number of years. The contract includes towage of

logs. i.?V Since the visit of the Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Marine, to Auckland, tttefe- has been renewed confidence in the scow class of vessel. Whilst in Auckland, Mr Millar, after personal inspection.and inquiry into 'scows, stated that he was perfectly satisfied as to their safety, and that his opinion of them had been decidedly altered.
