KAIMATA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
A very successful gathering took place in the Kaimpta Hall on Thursday evening for the purpose of presenting to Mr and Mrs Herlihy a slight token to show the esteem in which they are held by neighbours and friends in the district. Kaimata, Ratapiko, and Waitui were largely represented, despite the boisterous weather experienced. The function took the form of 3, dance for those who wished, and cards for non-dancers. The floor of the hall was well patronised, forty couples being present. About 11 p.m. the first relay took their seats at the supper table, which was provided in Kaimata's usual liberal style, for which the ladies deserve great praise.
Mr G. Bocock then, in a very appropriate speech, presented Mr Herlihy with a handsome silver-mounted pipe from settlers and friends. Mr Bocock referred to the sterling qualities of Mr Herlihy as a neighbour and settler, and to his having filled the office of director in the Moa Dairy Factory Company, also as chairman of the Kaimata branch of the N.Z.F.U., and also always doing his best for the welfare of his district. He hoped that Mr Herlihy would live long to enjoy the use of the pipe. Mrs Herlihy was presented with a sil-i ver teapot, Mrs W. E. Miles making the presentation in a few well-chosen remarks.
Mr Herlihy, in thanking his neighbours and friends, said it was always a pleasure to him to do his best for the district in which he lived, but he really did not know that he had done anything more than his duty. After the presentation dancing proceeded and was kept up till the "wee sma' hours." Everybody seamed to have enjoyed themselves, and I hear it voted as being one of the most successful functions which have taken place at Kaimata.
[ Mr and Mrs Herlihy are leaving Kaimata and taking up their residence iv Inglewood.
Mr W. E. Miles acted as M.C., and everything went off successfully.
