STRATFORD.
(From Our Resident Agent.) I March 25.— "Someone has blundered" over the cadets' visit to the Exhibition. The boys went away on the understanding that they would have a week in Christchurch,' but this morning a telegram was received by Mr Symes, M H.R., from tho officer commanding the Stratford companies complaining that they were under orders to leave camp for home to-morrow (Tuesday) j morning, thus curtailing their visit to ; three days. Mr Symes at once wired , the Minister of Education, and received j the very unsatisfactory reply that it | could not be helped, as neither boats c nor trains would be available later in xhe week. It is needless to say that; when the news got about the town in--tense indignation-was, expressed that the boys should have been taken such a long and tiresome journey on talse pretences. A later wire received by the Chairman of the School Committee seems to show that by some means the Stratford boys have got permission to*' remain till Friday, but ,the position is, somewhat obscure. The Rev. J. M. Thomson, of the Presbyterian Kirk, has returned from a. month's holiday, and. has not returned alone. The manse is no longer a bacne- / lor establishment. Pheasants must be getting scaree 5 ; about here. I see our Acclimatisation . Society is importing a number tor lA* cottage on Regan Street belonging tc Mr J. Sharrock was destroyed by •fire last night. The occupant was.trom . home, and lost all his furniture.
