FIRES.

L The building- destroyed by fire, this morning was owned by the estate of the' late, Mr W. A. Fitzherbert, and was occupied by the following tenants: — Johnston and Burns, indent agents* insured for £50 in the Northern Office; Harris and Bastin, machinery" importers, £50 in the Northern; Field, Luokie, and Toogdod, lawyers* £100 in the New .Zealand* C. A. McDonald (Hercules Machine, . Co.), £25 in the New Zealand ; A. T. Clarke, accountant, £10 in the ' Victoria; G. F. Wilson,, insurance agent, £100. in the North British. The following are uninsured : — HoldI ship, barrister; Page and Anderson, builders; l Wo6lf and Co., manufacturers,.. t . -,.- f .~- > • The following are -uncertain : — W. The fire made it clear that if au outbreak occurred any distance from wheie ' the . water could be pumped, from the harbour .'it would be next door to impossible to stop it, if it'^ot good hold, by means of the present water supply. The pipe bridge at the Hutt, however, was repaired ihis morning, and the laying of the pipes will be put in hand at once so that the main water supply from Wainui-o-mata is expected to be available before the end of the week.
