COLLISION IN AUCKLAND HARBOUR.
Auckland, March 26.— The Northern Company's steamer Rotomahana and the Devonport ferry steamer Kestrel collided last night off the end of the Railway. Wharf, so severely as "to cause a momentary panic on board the Kestrel, which* was -carrying a large number of passengers. An inquiry is to be held, by ithe Customs, , pending which neither* Captain will make any statement. A passenger by the Kestrel states that the vessels, were near the wharves, £he Rototnahaiia coming up showing a red light, while the Kestrel displayed a green one. The Kestrel blew her whistle and altered her course, showing a red light. The Rotomahana approached, showing green and, red, and then altered her course a little, showing red. The Rotomahana was then 250. yards away. The Kestrel, noticing the change of course, blew tLreo whistles and went full speed astern. The Rotomahana struck the Kestrel on, the port boW, cutting into the woodwork 1 slightly: The force of the impact was very perceptible, and it was a narrow escape.
