Signs of Progress.

Cheering signs of the growth of the trade and industry in this town may be found in the premises af Messrs J r and T. A very, both of whom have found if necessary to .provide large additional accommodation for their respective businesses. Up till recently a portion of the ground floor of their building has been let as sauJple rooms, 'as -well as a large detached building at Lho back. j\lr J. <Avery, tobacconist, has had to find more room for his wholesale department by taking in one of these sample rooms, thus giving him a floor space- of - about 40ft. by 30ft. for this department^ Ample shelving is provided fdr the better display of the numerous lines of tobaccos, cigars, cigarettes and smokers' sundries which he now stocks in large quantities. lie has also had special -living put up, for the proper drying find maturing of cigars, which are received in the green state from the Havana factories, and which have to be dried to suit the English and colonial taste in cigars. By dealing direct with leading factories Mr Avery is able to do- a very large wholesale trade, not only' in Taranaki, but as far down the coast as Wanganui, where he does a large business in ci<_jars. In addition, he has numbers of tX'tail customers all over the colony for special lines of tobacco, etc. The additional room provided will enable him to cater more extensively for the wholesale trade, as well as give lam needed tvecommodation in the retail department. *

Mr T. Avery, printer, stationer, and bookseller, was even more 1 pressed for room, and has absorbed all the rest of the available accommodation for his rapidly growing business. The shop has been extended about forty foot back, making a total ' length fr,om the street of some eighty feet. Over 2000 feet of shelving afford room for the effoctive display of his large stock of books, etc., besides which ample tables and show- cases give room for stationery, fancy goods etc. lAt the rear of his brother's premises he has 1 a large, well-lighted composing and printing-room, where he carcics on that department of his business. In tho detached building at the back, the book-binding,, ruling, and so forth are carried on, and to complete his plant in this branch lie | has installed a machine for blocking j and lettering book covers, etc. He

has also imported a plant for doing

photo process work, a description of which will be given a little later civ, when everything is in working order. It is encouraging to find old established businesses like these growing so much as to den.'and such large extensions as havp' been carried out by the Messrs Averv.
